£10.00

Ian McKellen, award winning actor of stage and screen, spent his early life in Wigan before moving to Bolton at the age of 12 where he attended Bolton School. An early fascination with the theatre was encouraged by his parents, who took him on a family outing to Peter Pan at the Opera House in Manchester when he was three.

McKellen is a leading LGBT rights campaigner, and in 2015 he led the 25th Manchester Pride festival.

Artist James Chapman explains:

"When it comes to Manchester movie stars, they don’t get much bigger than Sir Ian McKellen. From Gandalf to Magneto to King Lear to Sherlock Holmes, on stage and screen he’s done it all. And if there’s one place his Lord of the Rings costume would fit in in 2016, it’s the Northern Quarter."
