Born in Oldham in 1968, physicist Brian Cox rose to fame appearing in numerous science programmes for BBC radio and television.
Cox who studied physics at the University of Manchester, was also a keen keyboard player, joining D:Ream, a group that had several hits in the UK charts, including the number one, "Things Can Only Get Better", although he did not actually play on the track.
Artist James Chapman explains:
"I studied physics at the University of Manchester and Brian was always this mysterious figure that people occasionally saw in a lift and no-one believed them. The Museum of Science and Industry was also a part of my studies, so combining Manchester’s premier scientific floppy haired hunk with this great scientific location was a perfect match."
